There are three main elements to the durable repair of wood
- Inspection / Inventory
- A Sound Substrate
- Finishing / Protecting
Wood is one the most widely used natural products in Ireland. Once used it is exposed to many potentially harmful influences, so it requires periodic care and maintenance. Many people think that applying a coat of paint alone is sufficient maintenance. This is not the case. Experience has shown us that there are several factors in the care and preservation of wood - keeping moisture from penetrating the surface is propoably the most important. Here is demonstrated the 1-2-3 maintenace system used by Historic Sash Windows to great success.
1. Inspection and Inventory Assessing Existing Condition |
Establishing the condition of the wood surfaces and timber constructions is step one, and is generally carried out to a certain system
- the substrate - examination of the substrate, including joints, surface cracks and exposed end-grain
- the glass sealing - including moisture ingress between the glass and putty, and the condition of the putty
- the paint system - including the condition of the existing finish, including the interior
- other aspects - condition of the hinges, locks, preimeter sealing, faulty repairs

2. A Sound Substrate Preventative Work Methods |
Preventative methods can prevent future damage and unforsen expenditure. A sound substrate is the basis for the preservation of wood surfaces and timber constructions. The images are arranged to show the problem, the treatment and the result for each probem.

2. A Sound Substrate Repair Methods |
The use of durable products and proven work methods elimates costly replacements. The images are arranged to show the problem, the treatment and the result for each probem.

2. A Sound Substrate Glazing Repair System |
Moisture penetration into timber constructions is caused by capillary action between the glass and putty. With putty, cracking can occur and leads to all kinds of problems. Our products offer a long term solution for moisture problems and eliminates cracking in the future.

3. A Durable Final Result Finishing and Protecting |
Protecting the sound substrate is an important element in achieveing a durable final result. We use protects that ensure the effects of weather and moisture are no longer an issue and the wood stays dry. By using our 1-2-3 maintenance system, we ensure less frequent maintenance and no more unpleasant financial surprises.
